Every month Ascencia welcomes over 300 volunteers to the shelter! Despite obstacles from everyday life such as work deadlines, kids’ soccer practices and crazy rush-hour traffic, our dedicated volunteers such as School on Wheels and Free Arts for Abused Children arrive at the shelter in time to help our shelter children with homework or lift their spirits with arts & crafts. We also have volunteers provide adult clients with art therapy, Reiki and creative writing clinics. And volunteers from National Charity League, Inc., Glendale Chapter, throw monthly birthday parties for our shelter residents! You think you’ve seen it all until a 60 year old man recovering from surgery rouses himself out of his bed to get to the dining room for birthday bingo!
We also have volunteers with a heart for feeding our clients – they hang up from their last minute conference calls, file the papers away for the day only to extend their day by donning aprons to prepare and serve hearty meals for our shelter residents. These guest chefs are our largest volunteer group by far, including local congregations, employees from businesses large and small, law firms and students from local schools. All told, our guest chefs underwrite over $60,000 in food for the shelter EVERY YEAR! Click here to see our listing of Guest Chefs!
Volunteers also take on chores at the shelter, chores that a lot of people in the world prefer to avoid in their own homes – they scrub and sanitize our kitchens, organize our pantries and sometimes, roll up their sleeves and help clients move furniture into their new apartments!
We like to ask what keeps our volunteers coming back, week after week, month after month, and for many like Holy Family Church in Glendale and St. Robert Bellarmine in Burbank, for more than a decade! The responses run the gamut but some of our favorites have to do with philanthropy for its own sake. Or a firm belief that by helping our neighbors in need, we help ourselves to be better people. And every single volunteer supports Ascencia’s mission to end homelessness in the greater Glendale area, one person, one family at a time.
To all of our dedicated volunteers, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
