This year, like any other had its shares of highs and lows. One of the biggest highs for us was taking on operation of the winter shelter program in Glendale. We committed to an 80 bed program and opened at the Glendale Armory on December 1st. The first night of the program 40 people showed up and within a few days we reached a nightly count of 80 people.
And then staff had to start turning people away.
Imagine on these very cold and wet nights, having to tell someone you can’t let him in and his best hope is a 2 hour wait for a van that will take him an hour away to the Sylmar shelter. Or to suggest staying on the buses all night to keep warm.
While our elected officials in Washington continue to argue about budget priorities and who should be sacrificing, there are people who have nothing left to give, except their gratitude for some help.
You can help us keep a few more people out of the cold this winter with a tax-deductible donation to Ascencia. That, for us, would be a real high. You can donate by clicking on this link: http://bit.ly/GiveAscencia
From all of us at Ascencia, we wish you a healthy and happy new year.
