A few Saturday’s ago, Ascencia was privileged to to be chosen by St. Francis High School for their Annual Day of Service!
Brother Christopher and Father John drove up at noon in a school bus filled with students ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work.
We started the day with an orientation of Ascencia’s Emergency Housing Program and a tour of our shelter.
The young students then received their day assignments, rolled up their sleeves and started making (90) brown bag lunches for our Winter Shelter (our additional 80 bed shelter). They scrubbed and cleaned the entire sleeping area, the dining room, children’s study and the kitchen of our year round shelter. They separated and folded large bags full of donated clothing and they cleaned out supply closets and organized in a neat and orderly fashion.
They slow cooked pulled pork and served it on buns with cole slaw on the side, and even baked 4 chocolate cakes for dessert! A special mention goes to Father John who was celebrating his Happy Birthday on Saturday! Dinner was served by 6pm and birthday cake followed with the traditional happy birthday sung to Father John.
It was fabulous to see clients and volunteers sitting together at dinner. Everyone was engaged in conversation and our clients were so thankful for a wonderful meal and great company.
St. Francis High School students have been coming to Ascencia to serve breakfast for more than 3 years and they should be commended for instilling in their students, the value of good works and service to those who have come upon hard times.
We thank them for their unwavering support and heartfelt compassion!
