To our supporters and most importantly, to the people we serve:
Ascencia will not be operating the winter shelter this year. We are working to keep the year-round program, which serves families with children, and individuals, open. While our year-round program has been jeopardized by significant government funding cuts, we lost the winter shelter program because we could not find a viable site. We did propose to operate a smaller program by setting up cots in our Access Center, but because we serve children in the same building, would need to require a background check. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority did not support this alternative and has designated another provider to operate the program in Pacoima. The winter shelter program formally opens in some locations on December 1 and in others December 15. Locations operating in very cold parts of the county will be opening earlier. Please see lahsa.org for more information.
Although we are very disappointed about this outcome, we will do what we can to serve the people in our area. I want to thank the Ascencia staff who were willing to accommodate the extra people in our facility, as it would have made their already difficult jobs even harder. I am proud and grateful to work with them.
